Joining the Fight...

Its time for me to join the fish fight

Fight you say? Yes...the fight for their survival.

It's taken me a while to get into this.  Not for a lack of passion or caring, but I want to have my shit straight when I start spouting off on issues.

I want to correct and concise.

I want to have facts, and coupled with the emotion that we all have for Salmon and Steelhead...I want to sound like I've got my head screwed on correctly

In short, I've needed to become educated.

So I've begun the process, and working now to learn more about the lower 4 Snake River Damns and their impact on our inland fishery, and their impact on the fishery as a whole

Lending a hand in my education is Jerry White, a big dog from  Save our Wild Salmon and director of the Working Snake River Project.  Lots more to come about these  linked orgaizations later.

We Sportsmen and Women are a powerful bunch.  I dont care if you have a spinning reel, a click pawl or a disc drag to hold your line....it's time to join the fight.

I have erred in the past...as shown here .   But it's about moving forward in a combined effort, realizing we have a gift and we better link up to keep it available for future little boys and girls who get to experience the show a hot steelhead can put on.

If you have other conservation groups I should know about, please let me know.

I am ready for the knowledge

Another River Checked off...The Sandy

I was lucky enough to sneak away on a quick trip to Portland for a few hours to toss some bugs in to the Sandy River.  We've driven over it a gazillion times on the way to and from Portland but have never explored.

Thanks to some tips from Chou Dog and Steelie Mike, we found our way to some beautiful runs and riffles.  30 minutes from my uncles house we were ripping some Snap T's into some water that screamed "swing me"

No players on this trip, but with this recon work and a little better timing, I think we'll make it happen in the future.  I think its plain outstanding to be able to leave Portland and start fishing so quickly.  After a fall and winter of marathon 3 hour each way trips to the Ronde, the ability to throw your stuff in the car and fish for steel after work has to be refreshing...let alone to have the "possibility" to go head to head with a King on a accidental hook up

Back from the Dead....

Eastern Rises, coming finally, May 2010

Eastern Rises | teaser from felt soul media on Vimeo.

Thank God!

I first saw this trailer for "Eastern Rises" somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 years ago.  Produced by Way Upstream and Felt Soul Media, (aka the guys behind "The Hatch" and what I consider their best work because of it's impact, "Red Gold") this movie looks like it's going to be next level.

I actually thought this project was shelved as I heard zero about it for a heck of a long time.  I kept checking Felt Soul's site, thinking I would see an announcement.  BUT.....

According to what I've read on the fishing bible Moldy Chum, the movie is set to come out in a couple of months.

So where to I send my credit card info to?

Also, here's  the movie's site, currently under construction

Updating the Stickers

The new Carp Taxi has a lot of history in it.  After all, before we rescued it, it had spent the last 20 years sitting in a barn on the Camas Prarie in Idaho.  There are old Idaho licensing stickers all over it, but now I think its the right time to give it a little fly fishing sticker street cred....

More to come...and if anyone out there has a sticker for us, we'll gladly rock it on the boat

Knowing where my food comes from

We are embarking on a new endevor here at the Millsfly household.  Gardening.  We have a tiny little plot of ground where we're going to try our hand at Broccoli, Carrots, Cucombers, Tomatoes, etc.  A few herbs to boot

Why you may ask.  More and more, I like to feel connected to my food chain

While I dont harvest many of the first I catch, bringing a hatchery steelhead is a rewarding feeling.  Not because I conquered the wild, but because I get to choose what we eat.

Blood on the knife, feathers on the table, hands in the dirt.  A connection to our food

Project Click Pawl

I found an old Shakespere Click Pawl recently, and I think it's still has a little fish love still in it.  Stay tuned
