In the little town of Old Hazelton, BC, just off the banks of the Skeena River is the home of to some of the most beautiful outdoor art you have ever seen.

Big News From 2 Great Outfitters...

Marty and Mia Shepard of Little Creek Outfitters recently announced that in combination with Brian Silvey Guide Service, they have purchased Big River Outfitters and their permits to guide on the Deschutes River.  This expands Little Creek's rivers to the John Day, Grande Ronde, Deschutes, Sandy and Clackamas River.  The Shepards are on my short list of people I cant wait to fish with.  Hopefully that will come soon!

Just About A Year Ago...

We began our journey to Steelhead Valhalla.   The steelhead water of Northwest BC is a place to be seen in person, and I can't wait till go back again.

Silly Fortune Minerals, I think you've lost your mind again

I think you've picked a fight with just about the last group of folks in the world that you should in the effort to put an open pit mine on Klabona Mountain in the Sacred Headwaters region of Northwest BC.

The Sacred Headwaters is the birthplace of the Nass, Stakine and Skeena rivers and recently after a long battle, Royal Dutch Shell rescinded their plans to put dozens if not hundreds coalbed methane (fracking) drill sites throughout the region.

The people who lead the defeat against one of the biggest corporations in the world in terms of energy are the same folks who have banded with the Tahltan Nation to stand up again against another terrible plan to mine a place that shouldn't be mined.

The biggest question I have from this video is what is the CEO of Fortune Minerals feeling when the raw emotion of the little boy comes pouring out.  It's a bit hard to make out exactly what he's saying, but there's no mistaking why he's crying.

And as the elder asks the CEO after the boy's done talking...."Do you have a heart?"

It kind of makes me wonder too.

A Signal To Our Intentions...

In case anyone in BC would have doubted our intentions....we made it very clear

The Land of Swimming Giants, BC Day 1.

 Wow.

Wow.

Triple wow.

The confirmation of why we drove 20 hours to get here was loud and clear as Taylor's Hardy Reel sang it's sweet song.  The fish blew up his muddler and cartwheeled down the river at a breakneck speed.

The best part was hearing Taylor hoot and holler each time the fish cleared the water's surface only to smack down with a loud whack on the drink.

"Hooo Leee Shhhhhhhit"

That phrase does a fantastic job at describing day 1 of our BC steelhead adventure.

The Journey North...

How far are you willing to go.....to answer the bell coming from Steelhead Valhalla?

For us,  the answer lies in 868 miles and over 17 hours of travel time.

Saturday begins our journey.

Looking at the pile of gear that the 3 of us are assembling probably rivals the tonnage of most travelers that undertook the Oregon Trail.

457 flies, 12 spey rods and a couple of single handers for skating, all associative camping gear, clothing, so on and so forth

Excitement mixed with a tinge of nervousness.  A delicious cocktail.

So as the head hits the pillow, there are 5 more days between us and a lot of pavement.

That's OK, a magnet with fins will be pulling us northward.
